Arsenal 2 Napoli 0: Mesut Özil sets the tone as Arsene Wenger's side turn on ... - Telegraph.co.uk

It was not simply Özil spreading fear in Italian hearts, particularly in that astonishing first 15 minutes. Aaron Ramsey sprinted from box to box, winning the ball and knitting together quick-fire passing moves. One of his turns away from Gokhan Inler almost warranted a collective "ole". The Welshman was in buoyant form before Özil's arrival but he has moved up another level through close proximity to the inspirational German in training and in matches.

Olivier Giroud looks leaner, sharper this season and he has also benefited from Özil's service as seen with Arsenal's second goal. The tall French centre-forward, looking increasingly a bargain £10 million from Montpellier last year, imposed himself physically on Napoli and also with some deft touches.

Another Frenchman has contributed immeasurably. Mathieu Flamini has given the midfield a steel absent since the days of Patrick Vieira or Gilberto Silva. Flamini, a free agent from AC Milan, will probably not get the credit his selfless ball-winning deserves because all the talk will be about Özil, Ramsey and Giroud.

This was a vivid performance needing setting in a historical context.

Arsenal's first-half display was arguably their most accomplished against leading European opposition at the Emirates since the last 15 minutes against Barcelona in 2011 when Robin van Persie and Andrei Arshavin secured a narrow win.

Some of the football played by Theo Walcott and Cesc Fabregas in the last 20 minutes against Barcelona in 2010 almost rivalled the brilliance of Özil, Ramsey and Giroud here.

Yet this felt different. This felt a statement of confident intent from the first whistle, not a scrambled late reaction as against Barcelona. Arsenal were full of belief from the start, tearing into Napoli, making a nonsense of the draw-day declarations of a group of death.

They have already prevailed at Marseille and now face home-and-away tests against Borussia Dortmund. Robert Lewandowski could provide a reality check but Arsenal already have six points and a new swagger.

Due allowance must be made for the slight niggle that kept Gonzalo Higuaín a frustrated spectator but Napoli still boasted such talent as Marek Hamsik, Inler, Lorenzo Insigne and Pepe Reina in their ranks.

The Italians had still started the season powerfully in Serie A and defeated Dortmund in the Champions League, playing so well that their coach, Rafa Benítez, remarked that "we probably need to control the euphoria''. This chastening result will have done that yet few would have coped with Arsenal at their full-throttle best in the first half in particular.

It was a minor miracle that the visitors kept the score down to only 2-0 by half-time when Arsenal fans stood to applaud their rampant team from the field.

The first goal arrived after only eight minutes, the move began by Per Mertesacker who worked the ball right to Bacary Sagna. The full-back clipped the ball down the line towards Giroud, who controlled the ball on his chest and then flicked it on for the overlapping Ramsey. Napoli's left-back, Camilo Zuniga, was missing, allowing Ramsey to progress unchecked.

The Welshman took a quick look up to assess his options before sliding the ball to Özil on the edge of the area. The German's left foot did the rest, sending his shot unerringly past Reina.

Özil was the 97th different goalscorer under Wenger. Since arriving 17 years ago this week, Wenger has overseen 965 games, 559 wins and used 187 players from 46 different countries.

For all the focus on the £42 million Özil, Wenger has promoted 62 Academy graduates into the first team, and Kieran Gibbs played well while Jack Wilshere came on in the second, but Arsenal's opening goals came from major signings.

Giroud struck the second as Napoli's defence was again caught out by Arsenal's sense of urgency and rapid attacking. The 15th-minute goal was rooted in good anticipation by Flamini.

Miguel Britos volleyed clear Zuniga's throw deep in Napoli's half. Flamini, hungrier for the ball, stretched out a boot in front of Hamsik, knocking the ball forward and Giroud found Özil. Arsenal's No 11 calmly flicked the ball with that wand of a left across for Giroud to thump Arsenal further clear.

Arsenal were never going to maintain that momentum. Wilshere came on for Tomas Rosicky after an hour and did produce a magical touch to take the ball past Inler, drawing applause from a delighted crowd. Arsenal almost added a third when Özil lifted a ball in, Mikel Arteta flicked on and Laurent Koscielny was denied by Reina at close range.

By the end Arsenal fans were singing: "we are top of the league''. Top of the Premier League — and Group F of the Champions League.

Life is good at the Emirates currently — thanks to Özil.

Liverpool legends Fowler, McManaman and Jones return to club to help Kop kids - Daily Mail

Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones are back at Liverpool after being drafted in to the academy to share their on-field expertise with young Reds.

Brendan Rodgers is delivering on his promise to get more former stars involved with the club and they will play a complementary role to youth head coaches Alex Inglethorpe and Neil Critchley.

'It's great to have Robbie, Steve and Rob on board,' Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

Pride: Robbie Fowler and other Liverpool legends are mentoring young players at the club

'I said at the end of last season that I wanted to get more former players involved and over the off-season I spoke to a number of them about a possible role here.

'For me it's so important to have players like that around. These are players who the young guys look up to. The three of them have come in recently and I know they have thoroughly enjoyed having that involvement of working with the kids.

'We're starting with the older Academy players as they are ones they can really affect at this moment.'

Each player's specialist knowledge - Fowler as a striker, McManaman in midfield and Jones at the back - will be tapped by the Under 21 and Under 18 squads in targeted sessions. But the visits are also about off-field guidance and instilling pride in playing for the red strip, Rodgers said.

'It's both coaching and mentoring, and Alex Inglethorpe is managing that process,' he said. 'At the moment it's about individual work with the players.

'Steve McManaman is working with the wingers and attacking players, Rob Jones is doing some work with the full backs and defenders, and Robbie Fowler is obviously working with the strikers.

'They are giving them little pointers and passing on experiences from their own careers to help the youngsters. What we are doing is providing an opportunity for the former players.

'Then further down the line we will see what their interests are in that field.

'The young players coming through are picking up vital bits of information. I'm pleased that it's working well.'

The trio were chosen not just for their experience as players but for their passion for the club, which Rodgers hopes will rub off on his players as they push towards a first-team career.

'Sometimes managers feel the need to distance themselves from players like that but I love what this institution is all about at Liverpool,' Rodgers said.

'It's important to retain that connection with the history of the club. I want to protect that great history to ensure these players get the opportunity to be involved at a club they love.

'We lost a true great in Jamie Carragher this summer and you need people around who love the club dearly.

'If you look throughout the club now, we have lots of staff from this area. We have Mike Marsh on the staff with the first team – a local boy who came through and played for the first team.

'Frank McParland, our Academy director, knows the area inside out and guys like that are very important to me in understanding the culture of Liverpool.

'Getting the likes of Robbie, Steve and Rob involved is all part of that. They offer wisdom, they have played at the top level and they also understand what playing for Liverpool Football Club is all about.'

Jones, whose 12-year-old son Declan trains at Kirkby, jumped at the chance to get involved with the youth program.

'I really want to see the club do well and I'm happy to help the Academy youngsters in any way I can,' he told the Echo.

'There is some great talent coming through and Brendan has shown he's very willing to put his faith in youth. Hopefully we'll see more of the young players taking that step up to Melwood.'

fergiechester hahahahahha ur right there use are nothing without fergie welcome back to reality !

To all the Man U fans who constantly try and put good things like this down. I would worry about your 20 odd million pound tree midfielder the fact that wellbeck is pants and that moyes played a better team against Liverpool in the cup game than he did when you got destroyed by man city. Brendan Rodgers is doing a top job and it only enhances the love I have for the reds. 99% of Man U fans are plastic! You have a singing stand how embarrassing. Liverpool may not have been on top for a while but still one of the best clubs in the world. Now wind your neck in and go support someone else because that what glory boys do. YNWA!

no need to coach them in bin dipping. it is bred into them from an early age. lol

Who? Who and Who?.......... oh right, old snorty nose. LOL.

Imagine buying those 3 on today's inflated prices !

frederick bulsara - you're not worth a cup of cold compared to the original now go away & put silly comments on your silly manu site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

twentylegend-just remind me exactly how many manu players have gone into managament & the trophies they won. YNWA

that'll add a little "SPICE" to the back room. Wonder if they'll have to wear cream suits?

Hahaha the spice bous are back! Lets see how many lfc players end up in rehab next year!

Rob Jones was a fantastic natural talent. Ask Ryan Giggs what he thought of him. Such a shame he was plagued by injuries throughout his Liverpool playing career. I hope he can instill some of his talent into the young lads coming through at the academy.

Graeme Souness: We'll learn more about in-form Arsenal against Napoli - SkySports

Arsenal v Napoli

I don't see Napoli as potential Champions League winners this season, but they'll be a threat to whoever they play against.

They have been a good team for several years, they have a manger who knows what he's doing and they've strengthened over the summer. They're unbeaten in Serie A this season, which tells its own story.

I know they lost Edison Cavani, but they've brought in the likes of Jose Reina and Gonzalo Higuain, who is a fabulous player. I really like him.

I saw him come on as a substitute against Bournemouth in a pre-season friendly and he's got an angry head; he does not like losing. He came on when they were 3-0 up just after half-time and was falling out with his own team-mates because they weren't passing the ball to him and a few of them were in "Hollywood" mode. I like that. I'm a fan.

Rafael Benitez knows what he's doing in this competition. He's an experienced manager at the highest level and there'll be no surprises for him against Arsenal.

Arsenal have accomplished their first mission by winning in Marseille. I expect the French side to be the whipping boys of this group and they need to beat them home and away.

On top of that, they need to win at least one of their home games against Napoli and Dortmund if they are to get to the knockout phase.

Right now Aaron Ramsey is the star of the show for them. A few weeks ago at the Tottenham game I said that he looked the complete midfielder, except he doesn't get enough goals. Now he's addressed that and has become a goalscoring midfielder.

I played with a guy who got 25 goals every season from central midfield in Terry McDermott and Ramsey should be scoring goals if he wants to call himself an attacking midfielder. They haven't got a world centre-forward, so the midfielders have to chip in with goals, it's as simple as that.

Overall we'll know a lot more about Arsenal after this game. They are on a fabulous run, but this will be a really stiff test for them.

Steaua v Chelsea

If I'm being brutally honest, I thought Basel were fabulous at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago.

On the night, the result wasn't a major surprise for anybody other than Chelsea supporters because the Swiss side played really well. I think you have to give them some credit because they were fabulous.

I still think Chelsea will get out of the group and you've got to think they can go to Romania on Tuesday night and get three points.

Fernando Torres looked really sharp on Saturday and had a really good game against Tottenham, other than his incident with Jan Vertonghen. Other than that it was more like the old Torres that we saw against Liverpool.

He is suspended for their next league game so that may come into Jose Mourinho's thinking ahead of this match. Samuel Eto'o needs to get himself fully up to speed and I can see them keeping the Spaniard in the team.

Also, it seems Mourinho had his own thoughts about Juan Mata, but has perhaps had a change of heart. I was at Chelsea's first game against Hull and he seemed to have opted for a different combination.

But Mata has proved to be a fabulous player in English football and you'd say he would start in almost any other Premier League team. There was something in him that Jose had a doubt about but that might have changed and maybe Jose is thinking that he might be in the first XI.

I think Chelsea are going to be ok, despite that opening defeat.

Celtic v Barcelona

Barcelona may have set a club record for their best ever start to a La Liga season, but I'm still not convinced by them.

Celtic 2-1 Barcelona - 7th November 2012

There's still a concern for me at the back - Marc Batra and Gerard Pique are still vulnerable in my opinion. I think they're both very good with the ball, but I don't think they're great defenders.

And the injury to Lionel Messi is enormous; we saw that last year when they played Bayern Munich without him. He is their number one threat.

If he keeps getting muscle injuries then we'll find out in this coming season how vital he is to Barcelona because he's such a special player for them. In the tight games he's the one who makes the difference. People say he's the best player ever - but that's a debate for another day.

Nevertheless, Celtic are going to spend the vast majority of this game without the ball and will be relying on getting something from a set piece or a counter-attack.

Personally, I think Barcelona will have learned from this fixture last season when they were caught out by a corner and Tony Watt's goal on the break.

Champions League: Arsenal interest delighted Gonzalo Higuain - SkySports

Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain has revealed he was delighted to receive interest from Arsenal during the summer transfer window as the clubs prepare for their UEFA Champions League Group F clash.

Last season's Serie A runners-up travel to Emirates Stadium on Tuesday to face the Gunners, with both sides having made a successful start to their European campaigns.

Higuain, who will spearhead Napoli's attack in London if passed fit as he struggles with a calf injury, was one of Arsene Wenger's summer targets but is relishing the opportunity to face Arsenal and remains adamant he made the right decision.

"I was honoured by Arsenal's interest, I have great respect for Wenger and the idea to be in his plans filled me with pride," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"But I think my decision to come to Napoli was the best, I'm really happy with this choice.

Spectacular

"I hope that tonight will be a spectacular match, both the two teams are equipped to win."

"I was honored of the Arsenal's interest, I have great respect for Wenger and the idea to be in his plans filled me of pride."

Gonzalo Higuain

Although the Argentina international declined the switch to London, he believes Wenger has acquired one of the world's best players in Mesut Ozil.

"With Ozil, the Gunners have become even stronger," he added. "I believe that this deal represents the hit of the market: paying €45million, Arsenal has really made a big bargain.

"Mesut is one of the best forwards in the world. I played with him and it was great. When I see all the transfers of the summer market, I am increasingly convinced that Arsenal did the best one getting him.

"He's one of the best strikers in the world. Maybe even the best in the game?"
