Arsenal's Theo Walcott hits hat-trick in thrilling victory over Newcastle - The Guardian

Glorious attacking and goofy defending: here was a match that encapsulated the madcap appeal of this season's Premier League. The sides took it in turns to err and excite before Newcastle flagged and Arsenal signalled their top-four credentials by blowing the visitors away. The goal spree was thanks in no small measure to Theo Walcott, who struck a startling a hat-trick and created two other goals yet still did not resolve the debate as to whether he is best used as a centre-forward or a winger. Evidently he can be dangerous in both positions, and also frustrate in both.

Alan Pardew finished by far the most frustrated man at the Emirates, blaming fatigue for the fact that Arsenal were able to kill his team off in the dying minutes. While Arsenal had enjoyed a Boxing Day break thanks to the cancellation of their game against West Ham, Newcastle had come out of the wrong end of a thriller at Old Trafford and Pardew said that strain accounted for his side conceding four goals at the Emirates after Demba Ba had drawn Newcastle level for the third time in the 69th minute.

Arsène Wenger confessed: "The result was not an accurate indication of the match." Certainly, at half-time it seemed unlikely that Arsenal would catch fire so spectacularly because the first half was a damp squib of a display from Wenger's team, as Newcastle initially showed no ill-effects from their Old Trafford ordeal.

Ba, who has been linked with a January move to Arsenal, should have rewarded their brisk start with the opening goal in the 16th minute. Four minutes later Walcott, who until then had been redundant as a lone striker owing to one-star service, was given his first decent pass of the game and duly took his chance to outshine the Senegalese, springing a poorly conceived offside trap to collect Lukas Podolski's ball and stroke a low 15-yard shot past Tim Krul and into the far corner. "That was a Thierry Henry-style finish," Wenger said, suggesting the Englishman is benefiting from being mentored by Henry in training.

Podolski gave Walcott a chance to further embellish Arsenal's first-half performance when he eluded James Perch and slipped the ball through to the striker. This time, however, Walcott failed to beat the advancing Krul, who smothered his weak shot.

There was nothing weak about Cheik Tioté's shot in the 41st minute, and Wojciech Szczesny diverted the 30-yard drive over the bar with difficulty. Arsenal cleared the ensuing corner and Walcott led a promising a counter-attack before sparing Newcastle by misdirecting a pass to Santi Cazorla.

Ba gave the scoreline a fairer look when he equalised two minutes before the break, as his 20-yard free-kick deflected off Jack Wilshere and past Wojciech Szczesny. One-one and little omens of the larks ahead.

"We suffered for big parts in the game, especially in the first half. We were a bit nervous and had problems winning the ball back from them," Wenger said.

Arsenal began the second half as if they had spent the interval being berated by their manager. They could have regained their lead in the 47th minute when Wilshere played the ball to Podolski, who teed up the overlapping Kieran Gibbs. Krul beat away the full-back's shot from seven yards. But Arsenal kept coming. In the 50th minute Podolski won the ball after a Newcastle throw-in and knocked it infield to Santi Cazorla.

The Spaniard picked out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the far side of the box and the 19-year-old fired low and hard into the corner of the goal. On the hour mark, Newcastle drew level with the help of wretched Arsenal defending. Gabriel Obertan waltzed his way into the area and sent the ball across the face of goal. Sylvain Marveaux, alone at the back post, tapped in from two yards as perplexed Arsenal defenders looked accusingly at each other. The confusion soon switched to the other end. Wilshere dispossessed Cheik Tioté in midfield before swapping passes with Podolski and driving into the box and clipping a lovely cross towards the back post. Fabricio Coloccini could only head it on to his own bar and Podolski arrived to nod into the net.

Then Arsenal's defence relapsed. In the 69th minute the excellent Marveaux played a wonderful cross with the outside of his foot over the dozing Gibbs, and Ba volleyed into the net from six yards to equalise again. That is when the strain of the match against Manchester United began to show, according to Pardew. "When we got back to 3-3 we should have shut up shop," he said. "We just couldn't do that. The energy levels between the two teams was evident."

Four minutes later, Gibbs, clearly better going forward than at the back, raced into the area to collect a pass from Podolski and pulled it back to Walcott, who placed the ball perfectly into the roof of the net from nine yards.

Olivier Giroud then entered the fray and Walcott reverted to his more familiar berth on the right wing, quickly creating his side's fifth goal by crossing for Giroud to send a plunging header into the net from close range. The substitute then scored again when the ball broke to him following another jagged run by Walcott, who saved his most eye-catching contribution for stoppage time, when he turned up on the left wing and scampered into the area before showing splendid composure to ignore a foul and dink the ball over Krul.

Walcott says Arsenal contract 'will be sorted' and he's shown Wenger his ... - Daily Mail

Theo Walcott turned up the pressure on Arsenal in his ongoing contract negotiations with a stunning hat-trick in an extraordinary win over Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium.

Walcott, whose representatives are due to meet Arsenal's chief negotiator, Dick Law, in the coming days, took his goal tally for the season to 14 in a frenzied second half which saw eight goals scored.

The 23-year-old England forward continues to thrive in the central striker's role he covets and has made a major part of his contract negotiations.

Walcott said: 'Talks are ongoing and I am sure something will be sorted. I've been saying that I want to play up front and I am showing the manager what I can do. I believe I will be a striker and it's about taking the opportunity when I get it.

'I enjoy playing in whatever position but it was just telling the manager to give me the opportunities to play up front.

'I'm not saying I'm always going to play there but it's just showing what I can do. Hopefully, I've opened a few eyes and it's provided a different option.'

With just six months left on his current deal and Walcott free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club on New Year's Day, Arsenal will be expected to fix a firm date for talks and to increase the 75,000-a-week offer that is on the table.

Walcott departed the Emirates Stadium yesterday with the match-ball held above his head and the crowd chanting 'Sign him up'. After his side moved into fifth place in the Barclays Premier League, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reiterated his desire to keep the in-form forward at the club.

'I think he loves the club and the club love him and reciprocity in love is the most difficult thing to find,' said Wenger.

'The intensity of my desire is exactly the same as before the game. My desire is to extend the contract and I think that he belongs here and, hopefully, we can do it.

'Commitment to a club is a long-term process. I don't think it should depend on one game. If he had a disastrous game today, it would not have altered my determination to extend his contract and to sign him. That does not depend on one game.'

The most positive sign is that Wenger has now trusted Walcott in the central striking role, something the London-born player was keen to establish before he confirmed his continued commitment to the club.

Walcott has benefitted from practising  alongside Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who is currently training with Arsenal and is expected to sign a short-term loan deal from the New York Red Bulls next month.

Walcott said: 'I've learned a lot from  Thierry and just to have him around in training is great. You learn from the best. He showed great qualities on loan here last  season so, hopefully, that can be sorted out.'

It was Arsenal's fourth consecutive Barclays Premier League win, which lifts them up to fifth, and midfielder Jack Wilshere insists they have not been stung by recent criticism.

'We just get on with it. We know we've got great players here and we showed it today,' he said.

'Theo was great and okay we conceded three and we're not happy about that and we'll look at that but to score seven in any game in the Premier League is a great achievement.'

Wenger was also quick to hail Newcastle's resilience, although he lamented his side's slow start.

'It was not as comfortable as the score indicated,' he added. 'We played against a good team. They were always a threat going forwards, they gave us many problems.

'I believe we started a bit nervous, not completely relaxed, and at half-time 1-1 was a fair result.

'Second half we were on the ball higher up and were much more dangerous but they always came back.'

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew admitted his side had no energy left in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Despite scoring three goals apiece away at Manchester United on Boxing Day and today at the Emirates Stadium, Pardew's side have come away empty-handed on both occasions.

And the former West Ham and Charlton boss is aware some of his side's defending has been unacceptable.

'The last 15-20 minutes was a fresh team against a tired team and perhaps a bit of inexperience on our bench resulted in the scoreline,' he said.

'We're just so disappointed that we didn't get something out of it before then.

'The goals we conceded before then were not, not good and that's been our problem.

'For 70 minutes it was pretty tight, I thought we were giving a good account of ourselves but their freshness and the brightness towards the end of the game was just too much for us and we couldn't cope.

'The game really hurt us today but we know at the back we need to do better.'

I'm guessing he's telling us he will sign a new contract.

chelsea fan here.i think theo loves arsenal.i dont thinl he wants to leave.i guess wengernis sceptical about offering him high wages.well he is one of their longest serving players in the squad so i guess they should try offer him a bit more because he has shown what he can do.i hope he stays at arsenal

Sign Da Ting !

If Wenger does'nt give Theo a decent wage and contract,HE should go....Theo is looking for around 80,000.and a decent contract, how can Wenger stall,He has Arshavin on 90;000 !!!!!.for once in your life Wenger..... Get your finger out....

Bye ByeTheo.... SORTED!

i believe Walcott will stay at the club and become a great forward. I was convinced from the reading game in the league cup that he can play up front and my belief was confirmed today. He is a great forward with clinical finishing.

I wanna start calling him, Prince Theo but I won't until he resigns.

Want to know when a player is leaving Arsenal. It"s when he start playing good. Mr Wenger has no power to keep Theo as shown in the past" Nasri , Clichy, Fab, Song ,RVP" all of them left while Wenger was saying the contrary. Theo is no Henry or RVP but for now he is one of the better player in the Arsenal team. I do not want to see Gerviho or Chamack back in ... But knowing this greedy Board !!!

Rodgers is considering January moves for Birmingham's England goalkeeper Jack Butland or young German prospect Ron-Robert Zieler.

Rodgers has been unsure about Reina, 30, since he arrived in the summer and wants a long-term replacement.

The Liverpool boss almost moved to sign England international Butland in the summer but held off. Now he is ready to step up his interest in the 19-year-old when the transfer window opens.

Zieler, meanwhile, is one of the best keepers in Germany and is contracted to Hannover with a 12.2m buy-out clause.

Having started his career at Manchester United, the 23-year-old joined Hannover in 2010 and has played more than 70 games. He also has two full Germany caps.

Ken Livingstone 'turned down CBE' - BBC News

Former mayor of London Ken Livingstone has revealed he turned down a CBE in the New Years Honours.

Mr Livingstone, 67, said the accolade would have been for services to the Olympics but he did not believe politicians should get honours.

He worked alongside the then prime minister Tony Blair and Tessa Jowell MP to secure the 2012 Olympiad for London seven years ago.

Film director Danny Boyle is also thought to have turned down an honour.

'Best Olympics ever'

London's former mayor told listeners to his radio show on Saturday that he had been offered the chance to be appointed Commander of the British Empire.

Revealing that until now he had only told his wife, he said: "I was offered a CBE but I don't believe politicians should get honours.

"I was paid very good money to be the mayor of London and nothing beats the recognition you get when people of the city elect you in the first place."

Mr Livingstone, who held office from 2000 to 2008, was the figurehead for the capital when the right to stage the Games was won in 2005.

Previously explaining his passion for winning the bid he said: "I didn't bid for the Olympics because I wanted three weeks of sport.

"I bid for the Olympics because it's the only way to get the billions of pounds out of the government to develop the east end."

Speaking on his show earlier he said: "The pleasure I get is seeing it all worked, we promised the IOC what would be the best Olympics ever and that's what they got and I just don't believe politicians should get all these gongs.

"Someone who has done vast amounts of work in voluntary sector I have no problems with all of that."

Boyle, who masterminded the £27m opening ceremony of the Games, which drew a UK TV audience of 27 million people, is thought to have been offered an honour in recognition of his services to Britain.

When asked if he would like to become "Sir Danny" during an interview on Radio 4's Front Row earlier in the year, Mr Boyle said: "I'm very proud to be an equal citizen and I think that's what the opening ceremony was actually about."

Harlequins 26-15 London Irish - BBC Sport

Harlequins extended their lead at the top of the Premiership with victory over struggling London Irish in front of 82,000 at Twickenham.

Sale's win over Worcester on Friday put them one point behind Irish but the Exiles failed to respond.

Wet conditions produced a low-scoring first-half with kickers Nick Evans and Ian Humphreys sharing the spoils.

Danny Care's try saw Quins pull ahead and, despite Exiles' fightback, a late penalty try denied them a bonus point.

London Irish are now without a win in the Premiership in almost three months - their last coming in the 39-17 victory over Northampton on 6 October.

Quins' win leaves them five points above second-placed Saracens, who take on the Saints on Sunday.

Aside from some impressive early kicking out of hand by both stand-offs, the opening half was attritional and short on thrills at a rain-drenched Twickenham.

Evans opened the scoring on six minutes after Declan Danaher broke his bind at a scrum but, when Mike Brown was penalised for not rolling away, Humphreys squared the score soon after.

Evans doubled his tally after Max Lahiff went straight down under pressure from James Johnston only for Maurice Fa'asavalu to enter the ruck from the side at the restart.

Humphreys levelled again from in front of the posts, and with little in the way of running rugby, given the desperate handling conditions, Evans missed his third shot at goal.

The Kiwi was at fault minutes later when, after a great maul from Quins inside Irish's 22, he took the ball into contact and knocked on in Sailosi Tagicakibau's tackle yards from the line.

There followed three more attempts from the tee in the run-up to the break, two of them for Humphreys, but all were off target.

Evans righted his sights during the interval and made it 9-6 early in the second half but Exiles were level again after Ollie Kohn entered a maul from the side.

Care's determined finish saw him dive under three cover tacklers after Quins five-metre line-out allowed the England scrum-half to combine with Evans in midfield.

The former All Black's conversion made it 16-9 with less than half an hour to play.

Humphreys quickly pulled three points back but Quins soon re-established a seven-point advantage.

The Exiles brought on new signing Pat Phibbs at scrum-half and their tempo rapidly increased, along with their possession and territory.

It saw the deficit reduced to four again and, with Quins starting to make unforced errors, Irish began to smell an upset with their forwards in the ascendency.

But as Harlequins fought back the game came alive and culminated in a 19-phase move by Quins that ended with Phibbs yellow carded for knocking the ball out of Care's grasp short of the line.

Irish deliberately wheeled two five-metre scrums and referee Greg Garner ran under the posts for the penalty try.

The score denied Irish the vital point and Evans's conversion completed their misery.

Joe Simpson of Wasps lights up London Welsh clash with classic try - The Guardian

A brilliant try from scrum-half Joe Simpson was the highlight of London Wasps' bonus point victory as they did the Premiership double over London Welsh.

Simpson had an outstanding game as Wasps came from behind with tries from wing Elliot Daly, replacement prop Will Taylor and, right at the end, a fourth try for wing Tom Varndell.

Welsh fly-half Gordon Ross kicked all his side's points with five penalties, while Wasps fly-half Nicky Robinson landed three penalties, Daly booted one and replacement stand-off Stephen Jones kicked the only conversion of the match.

The first half-hour was dominated by the boot, both with positional kicks and shots at goal, as first Welsh took a six-point advantage and then saw it clawed back by their visitors.

There was not a great deal to choose between them up front, and the kicking was generally poor, with Welsh full-back Tom Arscott a particular offender.

Wasps could have led handsomely at the interval had they taken the majority of their goal kicks. Daly missed a long-range effort for the visitors before an excellent scrum from the Exiles and an offside decision given their way saw Ross secure two successes.

But the lead did not last long as Robinson levelled matters with two penalties but then sent two more penalties wide of the uprights from similar distances of 25 metres.

Ross, on the other hand, was deadly accurate at that short range. As Welsh frustrated their opponents and the front row of Franck Montanella, Neil Briggs and James Tideswell caused havoc for opponents Zak Taulafo, Rhys Thomas and Phil Swainston, Ross secured another two goals to take his side into a 12-6 interval lead.

But, even though the ball may have been greasy from the earlier rain, there was little excuse for a poor first half with hardly any invention in attack towards either try-line.

Robinson reduced the arrears after the break to three points with his third penalty before a piece of individual magic took the match up a gear.

In what will surely be one of the contenders for try of the season, Simpson took the ball from a lineout 30 metres from the Welsh line, went through a gap at the back and embarked on a diagonal sprint across the pitch.

He looked to be going nowhere but somehow found a gap towards the line. The scrum-half ran through three tackles and got past desperate defence on the line to touch down and leave everyone in the crowd amazed.

Robinson failed with the conversion but that put Wasps two points to the good and, when Daly kicked a thumping penalty from fully 53 metres, it was the turning point of the contest.

Wasps were on top and they threatened to leave Welsh with nothing to show for their efforts when Daly sprinted down the right wing to just get in for the second try of the game.

Welsh would not lay down, and Ross' fifth penalty put them within sight of Wasps. But a final killer converted try from replacement Will Taylor saw Wasps home and dry.

Vardnell went over on 83 minutes to get the bonus point and put Wasps challenging for a top four place on Saturday night.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry teaching Theo Walcott about striker role - Telegraph.co.uk

Wisely, Wenger urged people to avoid any comparisons between Walcott and his predecessor in the No14 shirt. "It's a bit early to compare him to Thierry Henry. Let's not put him under too much pressure. He has played two games and you have to be open-minded in our job and give people a chance. If they take it it's good. If they don't he will still be a fantastic winger, so it puts some more assets in his game. I am confident he will do well."

Wenger made the point that Arsenal play a different system to when Henry was in his predatory pomp. "Before we had more specialists in midfield. We had [Patrick] Vieira and Gilberto [Silva] in midfield so you could play with more strikers. Now we have Wilshere, Arteta, Cazorla, Chamberlain and Podolski. It's difficult to find the balance defensively."

Olivier Giroud is available to face Newcastle after recovering from his recent bout of illness but Wenger indicated that central role was earmarked for Walcott.

Wenger has been linked with recruiting a striker in the January window like Barcelona's David Villa or Newcastle's Demba Ba. "If you ask me 'Do we sign Demba Ba?' I say no," said Wenger, who then pointed out the problems of finding top attacking talent.

"It is difficult. Manchester United bought Robin van Persie for £24 million and he is 29 years old. They have scouts all over the world. They looked everywhere. Don't think that they just came in and bought Van Persie, they looked everywhere else. But to find the quality of striker that would strengthen a top Premier League team at the moment in the world is difficult."

He remarked that an alternative could be "to find him inside" the club. That could mean either Walcott or Henry. On Henry, Wenger said: "I've not lost interest in him. He's still coming today to practise with us. You have to be cautious that it's not one time too many."

Wenger admitted that he will be busy in January. He had "not had a call from Reading" about Andrei Arshavin but "if he finds a solution that is satisfying for him and for us we will consider it". Wenger is also open to offers for another striker, Marouane Chamakh.
