Joe Cole posed in West Ham training gear ahead of his emotional return to Upton Park.

He has rejoined the Hammers after Liverpool agreed to hand the former England midfielder a 3million pay-off.

Cole spent a second day at West Ham's Chadwell Heath training ground for a thorough medical before completing his move on Thursday night.

Cole snubbed his former West Ham manager Harry Redknapp's relegation battle at QPR, agreeing to rejoin his boyhood club on a free transfer instead.

The east London club will not pay a transfer fee for the England international as Liverpool are so keen to remove him from their books they are prepared to cancel his contract.

Cole was given his senior debut by Redknapp at West Ham in 1999.

The QPR boss said on Wednesday night: 'I was going to take Joe but he is West Ham through and through, so I understand. He is going back home so I wish him all the best.

'Joe is the only player I tried to get and I thought he was coming, but West Ham came in and that was it.'

Cole had 18 months remaining on his 90,000-a-week Liverpool contract, so the Anfield club have still saved around 4m by paying him off early.

The 31-year-old had a medical on Wednesday night and could play in Saturday's FA Cup tie against Manchester United.

Cole has endured a torrid two and a half years since leaving Chelsea, and was farmed out on a season-long loan deal to Lille last season.

He returned with the hope of forcing himself into Brendan Rodgers' plans, but has once again fallen short of expectation.

The No 26 shirt, worn by Cole during his time in east London is currently vacant in Sam Allardyce's squad.

Hammers midfielder Sebastian Lletget welcomed the club's move for Cole.
He tweeted: 'Training with my man Joe Cole today, top player, looking forward to it whufc coyi.'

COULD THESE HAMMERS HAMMER EVERYONE?

With Joe Cole returning to Upton Park, we are reminded of the West Ham squad that could have been had players such as Frank Lampard, Michael Carrick and Javier Mascherano developed to display the level of skill and class we see today.

And with strikers like Carlos Tevez and Jermain Defoe, we may even have seen more than the 26 goals that West Ham have scored this season.

With the majority of the moves going to domestic clubs, West Ham have been constantly reminded of their errors by the goals and performances of former players.

Also with the departure of Demba Ba and Scott Parker more recently, it is clear they haven't learned their lesson.

Although the Hammers racked up a sum total of over 50m by selling their big names, we have to ask: was it was all worth it?

Javier Mascherano - 2008

Carlos Tevez - 2009

Craig Bellamy 14,000,000  - 2009

Demba Ba Free - 2011

Welcome home joe....

It's a disgrace how a football club from such a poverty stricken run down poor rough area such as Liverpool can waste such money! Show some respect to the scouse peasants !! I don't know! MAN UTD FAN ;)

Football salaries and pay offs have become obscene !!!!!!!

As a Liverpool fan I'm glad to see to the the back of him . Not or never will be the player he was. Good work by BR. Don't think he'll contribute must to the west ham cause going on his form the last 3-4 years. Madness

To all the mickey mousers, don't blame players for taking the money, look a bit loser to home as it was lfc who offered silly money to the players! No one forced them to play unrealistic prices! If any body offered me millions to play football on a Saturday I would take it! It wouldn't be my thought that I am probably the worst player ever seen! It's the clubs fault or not doing their homework properly! Cole coming back home is definitely a gamble and probably a distraction we could do without. But if Big Sam thinks it is worth it then we should all give him the benefit of the doubt. But I fear the worse!

Good to see Joey back down south. As Chelsea supporter I know he will be happier in London. I hope the Hammers supporters will welcome him back. We know he has a soft spot for the club and will do his best for them. Joey Cole is a player that deserves respect. He's here, he's there, he's every @&£)ing where, Joey Cole Joey Cole!!!!

Gone to a better club.

Liverpool mustn't be able to believe their luck that mug clubs like these are willing to take an absolute dud like Cole off their hands. - staygold, London, United Kingdom, 2/1/2013 8:15 The only mug club here is the one willing to pay him 50k a week for the next 2 years while he plays for one of their Prem League rivals, the same club that bought an average striker for 35 mil then let him go out on loan 18 months later when they didn't have a replacement, the same club that released Tom Ince on a free transfer then offered 7 mil to buy him back 2 years later, the same club that spent 20 mil on Stewart Downing, 16 mil on Jordan Henderson, 10 mil on Borini and 17 mil on Aquilani

these football contracts are unreal.. arrives for nowt from Chelsea but hes cost Lpool best part of 6,000,000 in the time he has been there and we have had to give the **** compensation ? unreal. If he had any decency he would hae walked for free.. hes like Michael Owen, all that matters is , Greed I call it. Sorry future contracts should read " Dont Perform for what you are being paid for then 4 weeks noitce " and thats your lot! Make me sick these footballers.... no footballer is worth 50 k a week..!

3million pay off for Joe being a waste of space at Liverpool. Liverpool have to be the most stupid club in the world when it comes to doleing out money.
