It has so far been retweeted more than 630,000 times and favourited more than 213,000 times - beating a message from singer Justin Bieber to the title of most popular tweet.
According to Twitter, the election became the most tweeted about event in US political history, with more than 31 million poll-related posts sent throughout the day.
The activity peaked as networks called the victory, with 327,452 tweets a minute circulating.
Social networks emerged as crucial to garnering support in the months-long US presidential campaign, with Obama and Romney using the platforms to urge people to vote.
