Giant polar bear leads Greenpeace march through London - BBC News

Up to 3,000 people have marched through London alongside a giant polar bear for Greenpeace's Save The Arctic campaign.

The polar bear, called Aurora, required 15 puppeteers and 20 volunteers to haul it through the streets of London.

Protesters marched down Lambeth Palace Road towards Shell headquarters, on Belvedere Road, to call for a ban on oil and gas drilling in the Arctic.

Aurora's fur, made of ragged fabric, carries the names of more than three million supporters.

London was one of 70 cities worldwide holding a day of action.

A Met Police spokesman said there were no incidents reported.

A Greenpeace spokeswoman said it was a "family-friendly" event to raise awareness.

"We did stand outside Shell's headquarters for around an hour holding banners calling for the Arctic to be protected. Shell has an injunction out on us so we had to stand outside a line around the site," she told BBC News.

Shell has previously told the BBC it respects the rights of individuals and organisations to engage in "a free and frank exchange of views about our operations".
