Boris Johnson tops Twitter trends list - Telegraph.co.uk


X Factor contestant Rylan Clark got Twitter talking.

Twitter has revealed its most talked about topics as part of a review of 2012. The list of top trends shows The Hunger Games to be the most talked-about film of the year, while American rapper Rick Ross was the top trending music artist. Ross was ahead of Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift. The top Brits on the list were boy band JLS, in fifth.

Though it was beaten by the Hunger Games, the Bond franchise took the next two spots on the list, with James Bond appearing second and Skyfall coming third.


James Bond was both second and third on the film list.

In a year dominated by sport, the Paralympics was the leading trend, ahead of Liverpool in second place and Manchester United in third. The Olympics was fourth in the top 10.

In Google's trends list, released earlier today, Jeremy Hunt was the top trending politician. On Twitter the list of political trends is headed by David Cameron. Labour leader Ed Miliband is fifth, while Nick Clegg was 10th. Boris Johnson was sixth.

The list of television programmes is dominated by shows that are on screen frequently. Jeremy Kyle was the top trending show - with the hashtag #JeremyKyle also appearing at number 7 - while Eastenders was fourth and Hollyoaks was eighth, one place ahead of Newsnight.

Twitter said the biggest trending issue of the year was the NHS, which tops the list and appears in sixth as #NHS. Syria was second, while #Assange - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange - was third.
