Liverpool are giving a trial to Norway defender Vegard Forren with a view to a possible move.

There had been suggestions Forren was booked in for a medical at Melwood on Tuesday ahead of a 4.2million move from Molde but that is not the case.

He will train with Brendan Rodgers' squad from tomorrow for a short period. Should he impress, the 24-year-old could yet be signed during the transfer window.

Forren has been on the radar of a number of English clubs in recent months, most notably Liverpool's local rivals Everton.

Manager David Moyes watched him twice in the space of two weeks in November, once when Norway played Hungary in Budapest, the other when Molde played FC Copenhagen in the Europa League. Moyes took three of his coaching staff on the latter trip.

Rodgers, though, has been looking to strengthen Liverpool's defence in January, particularly as he will allow Sebastian Coates to move on loan if a suitable opportunity arises.

'It has been difficult for him to get games and the best thing for Sebastian would be to go out and get his games,' said Rodgers of the Uruguay international, who was not included in Liverpool's 18-man squad for Sunday's game at Old Trafford.

'But that might not be the best thing for the club. I have got to protect the club, that is my job as manager. We certainly won't be left short but I feel for the guy.'

Fulham were also reported to have lodged a 4million bid for Forren, who would link up with international team-mate Brede Hangeland should he decide to move to Craven Cottage over Anfield.

Forren has been capped five times by Norway, after representing his country at Under-21 and Under-23 level. He has also been linked with Fulham.
