Jose Mourinho was all smiles as he settled into his seat at Old Trafford for Manchester United's match with Liverpool this afternoon.

The Real Madrid manager was in Manchester on a scouting mission ahead of next month's Champions League clash and also to attend a secretive two-day managers' seminar hosted by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, the former Barcelona manager currently on a sabbatical from the game, are among a number of big names from continental Europe expected to attend the League Managers' Association (LMA) event.

Their presence is unusual given that the LMA exists primarily to represent the interests of managers in the four professional divisions of the English game.

It will only fuel speculation that either Mourinho or Guardiola could replace Ferguson at Old Trafford when the Scot decided to retire.

England manager Roy Hodgson was also in the stands, no doubt checking on the form and fitness of Michael Carrick, Steven Gerrard, Tom Cleverley and others ahead of England's match with Brazil early next month.

The two managers sat next to one another, but Mourinho seemed to have an aversion to the Manchester cold, sitting with his hood up during the first-half.

Bit colder than Madrid, Jose? Mourinho seemed to be struggling to reacclimatise during the first half

i hope jose's next for united, don't want guardiola, don't think he'll be able to handle the english game

He really is the special one!

Do your research Mail. Madrid in right in the centre of the Iberian peninsular, and is just as cold as Manchester, if not colder. It is far from the warming influences of the sea and is the highest capital in Europe. Can I have a job Mail?

he looks like darth sidious, evil and miserable, not even the dark side is helping him this year, haha

his madrid 15points behind bitter rivals will be 18points come 10pm - he is overrated - guardiola be a much better choice.

Cold!

A great coach replacing a great coach. I hope it happens.

chelsea waiting for ya !

Stupid comment from DM mentioning weather as Madrid is just as cold as Manchester now.

Love him or hate him he certainly makes things interesting.
