Liverpool have been handed a tough tie against the Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg in the last 32 of the Europa League. As a seeded team, Brendan Rodgers's side will start with an away leg at the 2008 Uefa Cup winners on 14 February.
Chelsea, after becoming the first Champions League holders to exit at the group stage, begin their Europa League campaign against Sparta Prague.
Newcastle United will play Ukraine's Metalist Kharkiv, while Tottenham Hotspur could set up a last-16 match with Internazionale if they beat Lyon over two legs and Inter progress against CFR Cluj. A meeting between the two sides would evoke memories of when Gareth Bale scored a hat-trick at San Siro in a Champions League game in 2010, but the Spurs manager, André Villas-Boas, is not yet looking beyond the tie with Lyon.
"Lyon are a club with many trophies and are a top team," Villas-Boas said. "It's a huge fixture and will fuel excitement. Zenit-Liverpool and Tottenham-Lyon should both be considered like Champions League fixtures so I think this is something important for the competition, for how it's seen in this country."
Elsewhere, Ajax face Steaua Bucharest in a meeting of former European champions, while the holders, Atlético Madrid, play Rubin Kazan as they bid to defend the title they won with a comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Athletic Bilbao in last season's all-Spanish final.
The first-leg matches will all be played on 14 February, with the return games on 21 February.
