The first half ended with Welsh up 12-6. The Welsh Exiles had all the play in the early exchanges after the turnaround, the best try-scoring opportunity of the afternoon seven minutes into the second half when scrum-half Tyson Keats knocked on over the Irish line after Nick Scott had kicked through. It was a sitter.
"We could have scored with a pushover try that was not allowed, and when we
dropped the ball over the line, my grandmother rang up and said that she could have scored that one," said Lyn Jones. To be fair, gran was probably right.
Thereafter, penalty ping-pong, and nothing more in the second half. Ross slotted a penalty from 34 yards which landed on the crossbar and bounced over, and from 15-6, Tom Homer replied with a long range penalty on 65 minutes.
Irish pressed on the Welsh try line with successive drives in the closing minutes, only for an unlucky bounce from a chipped ball to thwart Homer in the corner. No luck to report for the Irish here.
