The response to yesterday's news of plans to redevelop Anfield and increase capacity to 60,000 has been overwhelmingly positive. Speaking from the England camp, where the Three Lions prepare for tonight's World Cup qualifier with Poland, Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard commented: "I'm really pleased. I've had some special occasions at Anfield and so have the club. If they are going to spend all that money on Anfield and improve it, then fantastic. I'm very happy at that news."

Ex-Reds captain Phil Thompson was equally happy about the decision, tweeting: "Pleased with announcement about Anfield, desperate for 60,000 and for regeneration of the area! New stadium would have been nice but there's nothing like home. No dragging heels let's get started as soon as possible!"

Another to Tweet on the subject was former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann. The 39-year-old, who was briefly manager of Stockport County last season, said: "Great news about Anfield getting redeveloped. I think that`s the news most fans wanted to hear."

Congratulations to 20-year-old Reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey who made his full England debut in Friday's 5-0 victory over San Marino. Afterwards the player praised national team boss Roy Hodgson, telling FATV: "Things couldn't have gone any better. I've thanked Roy for giving me a chance to go out and show what I'm worth and hopefully I can get many more call-ups. I'm buzzing to have played my first game, especially being at Wembley in front of the England crowd."

Liverpool U19's upcoming NextGen Series clash with Borussia Dortmund at St Helens' Langtree Park will be screened live on Eurosport, it has been announced. The contest will be played on Wednesday 28th November and kick off at 6pm. The young Reds, who finished third in the competition last season, lost their opening Group 5 game 3-2 to reigning champions Inter Milan and next face Dortmund away in two weeks time (Wednesday 31st October). Rosenborg are the other team in Liverpool's group.

Two players likely to feature for Rodolfo Borrell's side are German striker Samed Yesil and Northern Ireland full-back Ryan McLaughlin. Both were on the score sheet for their respective nations this week with Yesil scoring twice as Germany U19s beat Luxembourg 5-0. McLaughlin meanwhile notched one of the eight Northern Ireland U19 goals put past Moldova in a resounding 8-1 rout.

A highly respected European coach has predicted great things for recent Reds capture Oussama Assaidi. Speaking to the LFC Magazine, Standard Liege boss Ron Jans described the Moroccan winger's potential as amazing. "It will take him time to get used to the Premier League. Defenders are likely to be quite physical against him but once he gets used to that he can be amazing. He knows there are areas that he can improve. But he is very keen to learn and is a player who always wants the ball. It was important that he went to the right club at this stage of his career and I think Liverpool is a good choice." Jans previously coached Assaidi at Dutch side Heerenveen.

19-year-old right-back Jon Flanagan appears close to a return from injury after telling Liverpoolfc.com: "I picked up a slight injury during the U21s game at Crystal Palace (27th August) when I damaged the ligaments in my ankle, but it's recovering well and I'm back out on the pitch jogging again so I hope to be back soon."
