Weather Journal: Chilly But Just for a Day - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Gusty northwest winds will return a temporary chill to the air across Greater New York on Tuesday — but only enough to hold back increasing warmth for a day or so.

Temperatures will hover in the upper 50s to lower 60s across the tri-state for much of the day Tuesday, while high winds of 20 to 30 mph buffet and swirl through the city. Once the winds die down, temperatures will warm a bit toward the 70 degree mark by the end of the week.

Though it's certain that warmer weather is in store for the rest of the week after Tuesday, what happens next precipitation-wise is still a bit of a meteorological mystery. Weather models are divided on the strength and timing of the next two rounds of rainfall, one due in Thursday and the next around Monday. The trick here is in a cut-off area of low pressure that should be around the Great Lakes by mid-week. These types of storms are notoriously unpredictable, and as their names imply, are "cut off" from the rest of the global jet stream circulation that usually helps to push storms along towards the East. Cut-off lows can therefore get trapped for days or even weeks, bringing loads of rain to those beneath them. Fortunately for the midwest, this one may help to alleviate still-worsening drought conditions there that have forced farmers to feed expired hot chocolate mix, gummy bears, and candy sprinkles to cows in lieu of scarce hay.

Closer to home, with leaves just starting to change in the five boroughs, foliage fanatics need only hop a short Metro North ride to the Hudson Valley to witness peak colors in the Palisades this week. For the next 10 days or so, that region will be primed for leaf viewing — helped along by this past weekend's blast of sub-freeze temperatures.
