Liverpool: Lawro Predicts Wigan Result - Vitalfootball

What scoreline has former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson plumped for in his weekly prediction feature?

Ex-Liverpool centre-back turned media pundit Mark Lawrenson has given his thoughts ahead of Liverpool's hosting of Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Writing in his regular 'Lawro Predicts' feature for the BBC, the 55-year-old believes his old side should secure only their third league win of the season.

Here's what he had to say in full...

"Liverpool had quite a few players who played a large part of England's friendly defeat by Sweden on Wednesday, which might help Wigan a bit.

"I see the Latics are back to their unpredictable best, though, following up impressive displays and wins over West Ham and Tottenham by losing to West Brom.

"But that's Wigan for you. If anyone asks you what they are like then just point to those results - winning at White Hart Lane and then being kept at arm's length by the Baggies, who easily beat them at the DW Stadium.

"Wigan won this fixture last season, and they deserved it too, but it was in March - which is the wrong time to play them. This should be the right time.

"Reds boss Brendan Rodgers came out after last weekend's draw with Chelsea and said that, if his side can do better than last season's eighth place, then that would be a fantastic achievement.

"I don't know if he was just playing down expectations but Liverpool should not just be aiming for the top eight, they need to finish there - and they have enough ability to do so. They need to start winning games, and they should start on Saturday."

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

About this former LFC player
Mark Lawrenson joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion for a then club record 900k in the summer of 1981. The Republic of Ireland international centre-back soon struck up a formidable partnership with Alan Hansen after injury to club stalwart Phil Thompson. After 332 appearances, Lawrenson left the club in 1989 and after a season playing in the American Soccer League went on to manage Oxford United and Peterborough United. During his time at Anfield 'Lawro' won 5 league titles, 3 League Cups, a European Cup and an FA Cup.
