Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has called on Arsenal to sack manager Arsene Wenger before he embarrasses himself.

Cascarino fears the club have only remained so patient with Wenger 'because of sentiment' and believe his reign at the Emirates will soon go the way of Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal are struggling down in 10th in the Barclays Premier League table and progressed to the Champions League knockout stages despite a limp 2-1 defeat at Olympiacos.

Writing in the Times, Cascarino said: 'Big clubs sack managers, and Arsenal are a big club. They have the best stadium in the division and a fine history, but cannot call themselves a big club if they are prepared to hang on to Wenger out of sentiment.

'When I look at him, I see a guy who believes in a philosophy based on simplicity. He won't change. He was a genius, but that genius has had its day. Football has caught up with him and he remains in the job because of sentiment.

'I am worried he could end up like Brian Clough; a magnificent manager who at the end of his career was but a shadow of what he once was. At the end of his Nottingham Forest career he was out of touch and Wenger is in danger of becoming something similar, of being embarrassment.'

Meanwhile, Wenger maintains Arsenal must forget about the Champions League for a while and concentrate on recapturing their domestic form after last night's 2-1 defeat at Olympiacos ended hopes of seeding for the knockout stage.

With qualification already secure ahead of the last Group B tie, Wenger elected to leave several first-team regulars behind as 20-year-old defender Jernade Meade made his European debut.

Although Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky fired the English side ahead after 38 minutes, the Greeks fought back through a controversial effort by Giannis Maniatis and a well-taken strike from substitute Kostas Mitroglou to leave Wenger facing more questions about the direction of his team - who have now not won in the last four and plummeted down the Barclays Premier League table.

'Let's see [what happens in the draw], but for now it is important for us to focus on the [domestic] championship, forget about the Champions League a little bit and get ourselves back in decent form in the championship,' said Wenger.

Arsenal, who were beaten 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium last weekend, host fifth-placed West Brom on Saturday.

Wenger challenged his team to produce a response.

He said: 'It is a good opportunity for us to keep focused, to show strength and unity, that is what you want to do in the next game.'

Wenger refused to be too downbeat after last night's defeat.

'We left eight or nine players at home and we had a positive game,' he said.

'We had a good first half, but we dropped physically in the second half because many players lack competition at that level and therefore we couldn't take the chances for the second goal.

'We also got a very bad decision against us on the goal. I am not against the fifth referee, but you would like at least for them to be concentrated on their job, but that was not the case tonight, Wojciech Szczesny was far away from the ball.

'Why didn't the fifth official tell the referee? It's difficult to understand, to concede a corner when it doesn't go off the goalkeeper.

'However, I don't want to make a fuss of it, so we have to take it on the chin and go home and focus on our next game.'

So Tony Casscarino.. Spending 100's of millions by other clubs has nothing to do with Arsenals position?? Buying and paying for a studium has nothing to do with Arsenals position??? Keeping a club healthy for the FUTURE is bad.. Isnt the future all we have as we cant live in the past?? So Wenger is past it because football has caught up with him.. or is it just because Chelsea and City have spent 1 billion poundds between them... People take this money so lighly like it is not the major factor. I guess it was just that Chelsea and their previous 9 managers were all genius's and also Manchini is a genuis because they figured that spend the money our OWNER gives us wins tropheys.... Wenger on the other hand has to make money for his owners... yes indeed he has lost it??

cascarino no chance of wenger ending up like clough he would never turn to drink or take back handers hahahahahahahahahahahah

arsenal fans have never had it so good under wenger they have over-achived for the past 16 years what has been achived at the club on and off the pitch is the stuff of dreams.

Cascarino you are Clown do not talk about Arsenal or Wenger talk about your own team and the Russians Club problems spending 73m on managers in 10 years do you think this is the way to run a Club so just zip it

He has been made a scapegoat by the board!!!!!!- Breezy , London, 05/12/2012 13:02 Honestly. The degree of dumb people out there never ceases to amaze me but i suppose, if everyone was somebody, nobody would be anybody. If everyone had brains, who'd do all the menial jobs society so desperately needs. Bact to dumb Breezy's comment. So Wenger has been made a scapegoat has he? Really? A scapegoat on a massive wage that he only could have obtained by virtue of singing from the same hymn sheet as the Board and selling AFC's best players year or year. Like i said, dumb people that should never be allowed out on their own!!!

2 points away from fifth...through to the next round of CL with half with squad injured..Quarter finals of league cup.....and you are thinking about sacking him....What? just be patient this could be Arsenals best ever season cos people are writing them off to quickly...And pls Zaha is not the answer he struggles to get in the palace's first team..

how dare that lumbering waster think he can tell anyone what to do acheive something apart from medocraty and then we might value your opinion

Idiot. STILL in denial. It would be almost unbelievable... but this is Arsene Wenger we're talking about - so it's more like 'just another day in the office'. Let's just forget about replacing the dust in our new Emirates trophy cabinet with cups; under Arsene (He Who Knows), it just ain't gonna happen. Constant mid-table (where we are now, amazingly enough) mediocrity beckons.

how many times are people and fans going to play neive and blame wenger!! Fact of the matter is the board are responsible for the down fall of this CLUB not wenger!! people bang on about wenger does invest but how can he invest if he hasnt got the funds to invested its not rocket science.. If it was down to the manager why wouldnt the board keep a manager at a club who is slacking and bringing in garbage of players to the club?? Fact of the matter is wenger hasnt got the fundage the board makes out he has hence chamakh, squillaci , park and this is purely the reason why RVP went and fans need to stop hating, If your club has no inspiratation and as a player and your at you peek you wanna go achieve greatness you go to a club that will achieve that FACT! As much as i am a fan and the direction of this team hurts me... FAN need to wake up and smell the fresh air!! Untill Stan the wasteman PHW and IVAN the terrible are booted this team is going to keep declining.. So Stand up for Wenger!!

Wenger please for God sake its time you get up and show all these idiots what you are. Every Tom,dick and harry these days is after sacking Wenger. Get off him all you clowns. He is a genius and he will show that.
