Frank Lampard could make a sensational switch to London rivals Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The Chelsea midfielder will not be offered a new deal when his contract expires next summer and could move as early as next month.
The 34-year-old has also been linked with moves to America and China but Sportsmail revealed last week that Lampard's hopes of following David Beckham to the MLS could be dashed after it emerged LA Galaxy want to sign Kaka from Real Madrid.
In demand: Frank Lampard (centre) is set to leave Chelsea next year
And Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger sees the former West Ham player as the man to add experience to his youthful, and faltering side, according to the Sunday Mirror.
Wenger could decide to make a cash bid in the coming weeks, rather than wait until summer, especially with Arsenal in danger of missing out on the Champions League next season.
The Frenchman has been dogged in his determination to sign youth over experience but may now be facing up to the fact that his plan is failing.
Sitting out: Lampard has yet to feature under Rafa Benitez due to injury
Arsenal lost 2-0 to Swansea on Saturday to leave the Gunners floundering in 10th in the Premier League.
The club's scouts have been told to line up senior players for January and they watched Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, 29, on three separate occasions.
Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez, 24, is also wanted on a free next year.
Panic buys in january? Why not abandoning the youth project for going for oldies? Might have to because the good ones want to play CL next year... Buying Lampard? 5 years too late!
