And Walker was left so incensed by angry messages on the social networking site that he decided to leave - though not before leaving messages in response to the abuse that he had received.
"Would love to know what I'm doing so different I give 100 per cent every game and still u [have] something to say I'm 22 and learning #embarrassing", he wrote to more than 250,000 followers.
The right-back argued that his error in losing the ball should have been mitigated by being given a free kick, continuing: "If I said what I thought to these people I would get done humans make mistakes it was 90mins and I though[t] a foul end off[sic]!!!!"

This is the latest in a long line of controversies involving footballers and Twitter, the most recent case being Ashley Cole receiving a £90,000 fine for labelling the FA a "BUNCHOFT***S" for doubting his evidence during their investigation of John Terry's use of racist language towards Anton Ferdinand.
