Enjoy the last of the summer weather on Bank Holiday Monday - Telegraph.co.uk

Traffic jams are expected on roads to the coasts, including the A23 to Brighton, M3 to Dorset and M5 to Devon as sun-seekers hit the beach for the last warm day of the summer holidays.

Supermarkets predict a barbecue rush as families make the most of the last of the sunshine before school begins and parents go back to work. Tesco expects total Bank Hoilday weekend sales of 10 million sausages and two million burgers.

VisitEngland said 4.5 million adults taking Bank Holiday Weekend short breaks are spending £1.1bn, with 6.5m day-trippers spending another £200 million.

As the week progresses the temperatures will gradually fall to highs of 24C (75.2F) in the south and sast and around 19C (66.2F) in Scotland and the north.

The longer term forecast up to early September predicts cloud and rain in the north but "largely fine" conditions for the south.

Met Office figures show the UK average temperature for June, July and August so far is 15.1C (59.2F). This would make it one of the 10th hottest summers on record.

Even if summer's average temperature unexpectedly eases to 14.8C (58.6F), it would still be the 14th hottest on record, and the hottest since the 15.6C (60.1F) in 2006 – the hottest summer ever.
