West Ham are ready to revive interest in Liverpool winger Stewart Downing. The 29-year-old has been told he can leave the Anfield club with Liverpool ready to accept a knockdown fee of around 5million for a player they bought for 20m in 2011.
His wages of around 80,000 a week will be a stumbling block but Liverpool may subsidise them initially to help a deal go through.
Moving on: Downing could be on the move just two years after his 20million transfer to Liverpool
Downing has made 65 league appearances for Liverpool since signing for 20million from Aston Villa in the summer of 2011.
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce was keen on Werder Bremen's Marko Arnautovic but that deal faltered early in the week, while he has also considered Porto's Silvestre Varela, 28, and Lille's Salomon Kalou.
St Etienne are showing interest in West Ham striker Modibo Maiga after failing to agree terms with Carlton Cole, who figured in a training match with Tottenham this week.
Failed: Allardyce was keen on Bremen's Marko Arnautovic (left), while striker Modibo Maiga (right) is being tracked by French side St Etienne

As a Liverpool Supporter I would rather we keep Downing in all honesty, when he plays with confidence he is a very good player.... he just needs to sort out the confidence issues

Expect any moment a full page newspaper ad of thank you, from him. For a player of his talent with 80,000 a week pay, YNWA. Don't expect to be endorsed by Kyut, Reyna and others recipients of now you will walk away treatment. Alas, it does not applies to you, Luis. No yet.

No - No! This cannot be true. Downing is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

Downing pushed through his move at Villa. We bought him from Boro with a broken leg, nursed him back to health, gave him his best ever season and he couldn't wait to get out of the place. He has been very poor for Liverpool and I am not surprised they want him out, 80k a week for about 7 assists in two seasons? Disgraceful! Too many footballers living off the gravy train of fans hard earned money. We have Stephen Ireland doing the same at Villa, on ridiculous money and not performing, form is one thing but if you aren't performing over periods as long as a season, then I am sorry but you shouldn't be paid vast amounts of money.

Another multi-million pound write-off !!!!! Still no sign of a decent signing (and there wont be `till the South American is sold, which he will be !) .... cos Liverpool are SKINT and the owner wont use his money to pay for the mistakes made by Daglish ! Serious relegation contenders if Gerrard is injured at any time next season ! They are a one man team !
