Here, we list a few museums and galleries in London to get you started.

Bank of England Museum, City of London

This museum exhibits the Bank of England's 300 year history, including displays of banknotes, coins, furniture, and statues. You can even hold one of its gold bars.

Opening times: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, nearest tube stations: Bank, Moorgate.

National Army Museum, Chelsea

The NAM narrates the history of the British Army from 1066 to present. The museum includes a new special exhibition called "Unseen Enemy", based on explosive devices and focusing on the British Army's experience in Afghanistan.

Open: Daily 10am-5.30pm, nearest tube station: Sloane Square.

Sir John Soane's Museum, Holborn

The museum, home of Sir John Soane until his death in 1837, is filled with the architect's personal collection of paintings and objects. The current exhibition - Northern Vision: Master Drawings from the Tchoban Foundation runs until September 28, 2013.

Opening times: Tues-Sat 10am-5pm, nearest tube station: Holborn

Saatchi Gallery, Sloane square

Opened by Charles Saatchi in 1985 as a place to exhibit his collection to the public, the Saatchi collection of contemporary art aims to showcase artists of today and the future. An exhibition entitled New Order: British Art Today is open until September 29.

Opening times: Daily 10am-6pm, nearest tube stations: Sloane Square, Victoria.

The Wallace Collection, Manchester Square

Located in Hertford House on Manchester Square, The Wallace Collection features a world-famous range of fine and decorative arts from the 15th to 19th centuries - with unsurpassed displays of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain, as well as a fine collection of armoury.

Opening times: Daily 10am-5pm, nearest tube stations: Bond Street, Baker Street.

Guildhall Art Gallery and London's Roman Amphitheatre, Guildhall

The Gallery displays around 250 pieces of art - from paintings to drawings and sculptures, in addition to a variety of exhibitions. London's only Roman amphitheatre is also located in Guildhall Yard.

Opening times: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 12pm-4pm, nearest tube stations: Bank, Moorgate

The Library and Museum of Freemasonry, Holborn

The Museum contains a large collection of objects with Masonic decoration including pottery, silver, furniture and jewels, with items belonging to famous Freemasons Winston Churchill and Edward VII also on display.

Opening times: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, nearest tube stations: Holborn, Covent Garden.
