Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has ruled out a January move to Liverpool, but has admitted he nearly joined the Reds during the summer.

Brazil international Costa was subject of a late £22million bid from the Reds in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

The offer was reportedly rejected, but Costa says he was very close to moving to Anfield, only to reject the switch at the last minute.

'I had options to leave Atletico Madrid,' said Costa.

'I was very close to leaving – Liverpool is a great team.

'But after so much fighting and overcoming so many difficulties to win my place at Atletico, I couldn't go.'

Liverpool have since been linked with a fresh raid for the 24-year-old in January, with Brendan Rodgers still seemingly keen on the striker.

However, Costa has ruled that out, insisting he sees his future with Atletico for years to come after signing a new contract.

'I will stay at Atletico,' he added.

'I think it is important for me to continue growing here and playing here for many years to come.'
