Last month Facebook updated its internal search engine to allow members to search more easily through their friends' profiles.
Graph Search initially allows Facebook's one billion members to search the social network's vast database of people, photos, places and interests.
Most types of information members post is not yet indexed, but Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said engineers were working to expand it to other data such as "Likes" and events.
Graph Search allows Facebook members to query Facebook using natural language rather than keywords.
Mr Zuckerberg said its creation had been "really hard" technical challenge for engineers that had been in development for more than a year.
Mr Zuckerberg emphasised that Graph Search was in an "early beta" phase of development and would be made available very slowly over "weeks and months".
He also emphasised that Facebook did not aim to compete with Google in broad web search. However, when members enter a query that Graph Search is unable to answer it will display results from Bing, Microsoft's Google rival.
