Barack Obama US election photo sets Facebook record - Metro

The image of the victorious Democrat was posted on his official Facebook page following his defeat of Republican rival Mitt Romney, receiving almost four million 'likes' in less than 48 hours.

'This Barack Obama photo is the most-liked Facebook photo of all time,' the social network announced yesterday.

The president also sent records tumbling on Twitter, with the same photo being retweeted by more than 780,000 users, the most amount of times in the micro-blogging site's history.

Twitter executive Zach Green believes the Obama camp's clever use of social media helped give them an edge throughout the hard-fought campaign.

'The picture said it all,' he said. 'It made everyone feel closer to the campaign in a way that hasn't been done before.

'It's really about a connected relationship with him, it doesn't feel like he's just someone out there, there is connectedness.

'It shows that the model of very active engagement, having a loud voice seems to be effective,' he added.

'But it's hard to prove that he wouldn't have won without this.'

Mr Obama has 22.7million followers on Twitter, compared to Mr Romney's 1.8million.
