Steven Gerrard has picked Manchester United's Paul Scholes as the finest player he has played alongside for England, as the Liverpool superstar prepares to make his 100th appearance for his country.
Gerrard captains England on Wednesday in a friendly against Sweden in Stockholm, where he will celebrate a century of caps gained over a period of 12 years.
During that time, Gerrard has played with some of England's modern greats including the likes of former Manchester United star David Beckham and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole.
But the Liverpool captain ranks Scholes above any other England colleague, and appreciated the opportunity to train alongside the Old Trafford legend when on international duty.
"Probably Paul Scholes, I would say," Gerrard told The Mirror when asked to pick his top teammate.
"Just because his game is very similar to mine and I appreciate what he has got. I like him as a person. To see him in training and play alongside him…"
Gerrard and Scholes were both members of England team that beat Germany 5-1 on that iconic night in 2001 - a victory that will remain one of the Three Lion's most celebrated.
Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and Gerrard - all of Liverpool at the time - scored the goals in Munich, and the latter said the team of that era was he greatest England side he has been involved with.
"I'd probably say the team which won in Germany was the strongest England team I've played in," added the Anfield legend.
"It had great balance between young and experienced players, we had some world class players in that team and that squad."
