Liverpool striker Fabio Borini ruled out for the rest of the season with ... - Telegraph.co.uk

The 21-year-old has endured a torrid time since joining for £11 million from Roma last summer — Brendan Rodgers' first signing – and has yet to score a league goal.

Liverpool's manager can at least feel rather more encouraged by his more recent acquisitions, as his £8.5 million purchase from Inter Milan, Coutinho, celebrated his first start at Anfield with a goal in the 5-0 rout at the weekend.

His Brazilian team-mate, Lucas, believes the 20-year-old will adapt quickly to the pace of the Premier League, despite the obvious differences to Italy.

"He is still adapting," said Lucas. "I have been talking to him about the pace of the Premier League and even in training, he can feel it is much quicker than Italy.

"He will need time to settle but one goal will give him confidence and after he scored it, we could see good things from him. He will be a great player for now and for the future of Liverpool.

"Every young player that comes to the Premier League finds it difficult at first come and it is going to be the same for him. But we have already seen a lot of positive things from him. He has got the ability to do well. We just need to keep positive on him.

"When he was at Inter, he didn't get the opportunities he thought he would get. Here this is a new challenge for him. He has settled very well and it will help him that there are a few South American players here already. We will help him."

Meanwhile, Rodgers expects Jamie Carragher to take a complete break from Liverpool before he can be lured back to take on a backroom role in the future.

Carragher is retiring as a player to join Sky Sports' football coverage next season, but it is hoped he will eventually rejoin Liverpool at a later date, his experience invaluable.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he had a small amount of time away but, over time, I'm sure he'll have a role here at the football club," said Rodgers.
