Taking the Pearce? Liverpool ready to swoop for Reading defender - Mirror.co.uk

Brendan Rodgers is ready to make a surprise swoop on his old club Reading to take defender Alex Pearce to Liverpool.

Rodgers was an academy coach at Reading when new Republic of Ireland international Pearce was emerging from the system and gave him his debut at the Madejski Stadium.

Pearce, 24, who has also represented Scotland under 21, played in all of Reading's matches as the rose to last season's Championship title.

But in recent matches Pearce has been displaced by Adrian Mariappa and now Sean Morrison in the heart of the Royals' defence.

No Heskey return...

Emile Heskey is enjoying life in the A-League so much that he is already talking about extending his stay with the Newcastle Jets into next season.

Heskey, 33, has scored 5 goals in 6 games to life his new team to third on the current season ladder.

"Extending my stay is up to the owner and the manager but hopefully I will do enough to be granted a new contract.

"Hopefully we will look at that later on, so I'm just keeping an open mind on it until then."
