Katy Brand: Why I'm avoiding my Facebook '2012 Year in Review' - Telegraph.co.uk

In fact, girls are particularly prone to this, posting pictures of any minute occurrence. Sometimes it's not necessary to do anything at all – it's enough to dress up, with full hair and make-up without any intention of even going out.

Taking pictures of themselves in the obligatory 'Facebook pose' – camera held slightly above the head (the most flattering angle), looking back over the shoulder, with one knee kinked in to the other, and a full on pout – and then posting them to be rated by everyone else in their friends' list is all that is required for a great night in.

And this is leading to all the rest of the trouble – it starts with a pose in a party dress (with no actual party to go to), then that gets boring, so the party dress comes off and it's a picture taken in the mirror in underwear. Then that gets boring, and, well, we know the rest… The reports of young teenage girls posting and texting pictures of themselves without even the underwear is getting more and more common and the consequences are not nice.

In fact, given how many pictures are taken by teenage girls of themselves doing nothing and wearing even less in their own bedrooms and then posted to Facebook, it would be a miracle if any of them ever made it to a country cottage, a beach, or even a friend's kitchen table. I may sound old, but suddenly my timeline seems a lot more interesting than it first appeared.
